More information on the Traditional Pit Barbecue

Feeling tired of high tech appliances taking over the kitchen? We’ve got you!

Let us take you back in time, when early Taiwanese would build earth ovens and cook simple ingredients like sweet potatoes and taro.

This cooking method dates back from the first settlers, building a kiln from scratch stacking clay to cover the pit and maintain high temperatures for hours. Food would be tightly wrapped in wet leaves and placed underground before the kiln is voluntarily collapsed onto the food to cook. After patiently waiting for hours, the last step would be to carefully search through the ground like a treasure hunt, digging out the ingredients and enjoy their deep flavor with charred notes.

Meet us in Qiaotou’s barbecue area on Saturday, Nov 16th at 12pm to feast on the traditional slow-roasted chicken and potatoes unearthed from the kiln! We will also have modern/regular barbecues with a wide variety of local food to try out.

8am – Build the kiln, stack the clay and start the fire

9:30am – Wrap the food and place in the oven

10am – Collapse the kiln and let the food cook in the soil underground

12pm – Start the other barbecues, set up the tables and have a toast!

12:30pm – Time for a treasure hunt: Carefully dig through the ashes to find the food!

Anyone is welcome to come and go at any time, feel free to explore the parks and enjoy all the other family-friendly activities (playgrounds, go-kart, gardens, historic mini train)!

Lodging in Kaohsiung

The wedding venue is walkable from stop R23 of the KMRT, so any hotel or lodging close by a MRT station on the red line would be convenient. KMRT stops with hotel options that are close by the ocean would be O1 and O2 along the orange line.
